STMicroelectronics to collaborate with IBM on chip technology STMicroelectronics and IBM have signed an agreement to develop a next-generation process technology that will be used in semiconductor development and manufacturing. The agreement combines 32-nanometer (nm) and 22nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process-technology development, advanced research adapted to the manufacturing of 300-millimeter (mm) silicon wafers, and design enablement. It will also include collaboration on IP development and the ability to speed the design of system-on-chip devices in these technologies. STMicroelectronics is a leading developer of semiconductor solutions for microelectronics applications. Corning announces breakthrough in optical fiber technology Corning, Inc. has announced the development of a new technology involving optical fibers that will enable telecommunications carriers to install fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks. The nanostructure-based breakthrough technologies allow cabled fiber to bend around very tight corners without signal loss. In comparison, current optical fiber installations do not maintain signal strength. Corning, Inc. is a global leader in specialty ceramics and glass. The company makes keystone components that help high-technology systems with consumer electronics, telecommunications, mobile emissions control, and life sciences.
