When traversing an IT career path, you will normally start as an assistant helping the higher-level positions in getting their work done. From there, you can branch out, and get into sales or get into technical support or even become an IT manager. But if you're after the big bucks, high tier administrative jobs are the way to go.

There are plenty of administrative jobs out there with all the new businesses opening up. They can range from secretarial related jobs all the way down to specific ones like database administrators. If you are looking for a good administrative job listing that can put something really big in your resume, climb your way to becoming a network administrator for a corporate network.

It doesn't matter how big or small the corporate network is. Network administrators are always needed to ensure that the network is running properly and the individual workstations with it. Network administrators have tons of responsibilities for their network and while it may seem like tough work, it is actually just a big combination of many basic skills in order to be an efficient network administrator. Anyone can learn these skills just by using the computer everyday and learning by reading articles online.

Here are the aspects of a network that should be maintained by a network administrator:

Initialization

Network administrators are usually the highest level of network staff in any corporate networking giving them full control in setting the network up. It is usually them that will configure all technical aspects in the network, install the required software for each computer complete with drivers, set up other parts like file servers and printers, and check if everything is working. If network engineers are part of the team, the administrators can assist and oversee their operation as the network starts to take shape.

Security

Maintaining the security of the corporate network remains to be one of the top priorities for network administrators to ensure. In large-scale networks, a team network analysts and specialists may be needed to aid the administrator in carrying out the security maintenance. In order to keep the security of the network tight, but still accessible without putting much of a hindrance to authorized members, good software knowledge and networking skills are needed.

This involves the use of anti-virus programs and corporate firewalls to be deployed in all systems to protect the network from attacks. Not only should the network be protected directly, but the security should also be tested by the network administrator himself or the analysts in the team. Thorough testing of flaws in the network can help provide solutions to potential problems before they arise. Security issues can be highly destructive if exploited and a good network administrator can prevent all those from happening just through proper care of each unit.

Speed

Corporate networks all have mission critical objectives to keep the business going and the overall performance of each workstation contribute to that success and must therefore be at peak performance to comply with the timely tasks that are needed to be done. This involves correct usage of software to optimize the performance of the system and good file organization skills to let IT workers do their tasks faster. The network administrators should determine if the systems need hardware updating or software updating or both so it is important too, that network administrators have a hardware background.

Stability

Two of the biggest hindrances that interfere with a corporate network's operation are system crashes and system failures. Even if the security is all in check and the speeds are tolerable, faulty network or workstation configurations can lead to some network problems that can be frustrating to repair. Therefore, it is better to perform a series of diagnostic operations to avoid the chances of units suffering from system failure. These operations should be conducted every time the network is idle so that no time is wasted in keeping the stability measures manageable.

Hardware checks should also be conducted to avoid risks of data loss and regular backups should be performed in case unexpected physical problems such as power surges and other disastrous events can harm the network. Even networks suffering a major attack can still be stable if backups are around and ready to be restored.

A network administrator has a long line of duties in keeping the network in top condition. This is why these jobs pay much and serve as an icon for achievement if added to any resume. If you enjoy troubleshooting or performing your basic operations in multiple computers, then working as a network administrator can give you great experience while becoming a valuable asset to any networked business.
