Technology, technology everywhere would be an appropriate way to describe the world we live in. Information technology is involved in your home through a computerized refrigerator, microwave or oven, your movement from the home to the work environment, through a highly computerized vehicle and probably the most in the office or school environment in the form of building access control systems, desktop computers and laptops and high capacity servers. With this growth in the role of technology in what we do comes a corresponding increase in the number of jobs that require I.T. skills. The question on many an I.T. job seekers mind is thus 'where can one access and apply for these information technology jobs?'

One approach one can take is of course go the old fashioned way where you would be to develop a list of the companies you would like to work for or that you consider the best match for your skill set and then go ahead to send out applications to each of them. But that are two main problems with that approach: it is expensive, not targeted and limited in reach. Enter online job boards. Online job boards have completely revolutionized the process through which one looks for a job today. Online job boards have ensured that you no longer need to go look for the employer; the employer comes looking for you instead.

There are online job boards that cater for a wide range of professions while others such as IT job boards are more focused on a particular market niche. Even among IT job boards are those that are further specialized in certain areas of information technology employment including system administration, database administration, networks, system security etcetera.

Anyone looking for information technology employment must keep tabs with the top IT job boards as these are likely to attract employers that are looking for persons with a higher level of technical skill than one would fine in general job boards. The most reputable IT job boards attract headhunters from the top corporations in the country. Once you key in your personal details and upload your resume, it becomes available to a wide range of potential employers thus exposing you to a larger opportunity pool than a conventional job application.

The business model of IT job boards differs from one to another. Some will require the job seeker to pay a certain registration fee before they can create a profile, access or apply for jobs on the board. On the other hand, other job boards place the cost on the recruiters allowing job seekers access for free. A third type charges both job seekers and recruiters, while a last allows both parties free access.

One thing one must be careful about when applying through an IT job board is to be certain of the website's credibility. Applying online even though it comes with a host of conveniences for the job seeker can also present a major risk for identity theft if one's personal data falls into the wrong hands. One would rather pay a small registration fee to access reputable information technology jobs board than dabble with a free one that may end up selling your personal information to cyber criminals.
